Frequently Asked Questions

All of Your RV Inspection Questions and Curiosities Answered

A proper and comprehensive RV inspection conducted by an NRVIA Certified RV Inspector is a complete and thorough inspection of all RV areas and systems including interior furniture, living spaces, kitchen, baths, plumbing, life safety systems, and the condition of the interior for starters. On the exterior of the RV, we start with the roof, all four sidewalls, slide outs, the undercarriage, the hitch, cargo bays, water systems, electrical systems, LP gas, and life safety systems including suspension and tires, and so much more. It is a hands-on inspection, not just a cursory look. We encourage you to visit NRVIA.org and read the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice that details what an NRVIA Certified RV Inspector evaluates. Be prepared to be impressed!

What is an RV Inspection?
Why should I get an RV Inspection if I am a Buyer?

Buy with confidence! RVs are expensive and complicated investments that require more then just a quick PDI (pre-delivery inspection) done by a rookie technician at the dealership. Private sellers are interested in selling their RV and might not share the issues they've had with their ownership of the RV. All you want is to take your family out for years of fun and adventure all over North and Central America! Buying an RV is a very emotional experience, and buyers will fall in love with an RV without taking the time to really look at an RV---they want to hit the road!

Having an RV inspected by a third-party NRVIA Certified RV Inspector takes the emotion and bias out of the process and provides you, the buyer, a complete and actionable report that you can use to negotiate repairs and the pricing of the RV. Don't sign any paperwork or hand over a check and never drive off a lot or off the seller's property until the RV is safe and ready for action. An inspection completed by an NRVIA Certified RV Inspector helps you understand what it is you are buying and in what condition it is in.

Why should I get an RV Inspection if I am a Seller?

Sell with pride! To a seller who is upgrading to a different RV or who is changing their RV lifestyle, selling an RV is a daunting process. You can walk around your RV and figure out what is going on with that mighty machine, or you can have a trained NRVIA Certified RV Inspector provide you a complete report on the RV so you can spend your time and money wisely in getting your rig ready to sell. Sharing the inspection report with the buyer is a wonderful way to show them that what they are buying is ready for their next adventure, and gives you, the seller, the negotiating leverage to get the asking price you've listed. It is a win-win all around.

What is a “PDI” and how is that different than what a Certified RV Inspector does?

Fantastic question! The dealership will perform a PDI--pre-delivery inspection. Typically, this is a cursory look at the interior and exterior of the RV to make sure it is ready to be picked up by the buyer. Some dealerships actually charge the buyer for this basic hands-off walkaround inspection! An NRVIA Certified RV Inspector is held to very specific standards and is trained to perform a detailed inspection that takes hours, not minutes, to conduct and leaves no surface, item, system, or function of the RV unchecked. A PDI might take an hour or so to complete. An inspection performed by an NRVIA Certified RV Inspector takes six to ten hours to complete. What is a “Premier Inspection” and what does RV Inspectech offer?

Many inspectors offer different levels of inspection services, like "Essential", "Essential Plus" and others. At RV Inspectech, we only offer Premier level inspections because we believe that every buyer and seller deserves the best and highest quality inspection each and every time. We can't see something in an inspection and not report it to you, so providing you the highest level of inspection gives you the peace of mind you want and deserve.

What is not included in an RV Inspection?

NRVIA Certified RV Inspectors do not drive or otherwise operate any motorized RV (Classes A, B, or C) and do not move or tow any towable RVs. We do not mechanically evaluate engines or transmissions other than to offer fluid analysis to help you baseline what could be going on with the engine, transmission, coolant, and other vital fluids. We do not remove wall panels, undercarriage covers, or otherwise physically probe beyond the surface of the RV. We do not hydraulically lift or perform any other intrusive inspections of the RV--we perform damage-free, non-destructive inspections that comply with the NRVIA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

What is a “Life Safety” Item or System?

A Life Safety item or system on an RV includes the windshield, seat belts (for motorized RVs), fire/smoke detectors, LP gas and CO detectors, tires and wheels, suspension, exterior DOT lights, fire extinguishers, electrical systems, the RV frame, and so much more. We encourage you to visit the NRVIA.org website to see the Code of Conduct and Standards of Practice we adhere to at RV Inspectech.

Are pictures included in the report?

We take lots of pictures! Your report will have anywhere between 60 and 120 pictures (or more!) of the RV, including 360 degree photos of the interior so you can see the RV's living spaces as if you were standing in the unit. We even take 360 degree photos of the under carriage so you can see what we see.

If I have a specific thing or things I want you to inspect, will you do that?

Yes. As long as it falls within the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice that the NRVIA publishes, we will focus in on any specific item(s) or area(s) of an RV that is important to you. Just let us know!

How long does a proper RV Inspection take to complete?

Depending on the RV, an inspection can take anywhere from six to ten hours to complete--and that is just the physical inspection. We spend another four to six hours creating the report and inserting the best pictures so you can see what we discovered in the inspection.

What will I see in my report, and how soon can I see the report?

You will see dozens of sections of detailed points-of-inspection that align with the NRVIA Standards of Practice. Reports regularly exceed 80 pages in length and offer unbiased observations that can be turned into actionable items for the dealership, seller, or buyer to handle. Issues identified in the inspection will be accompanied by a photo showing the details (unless the issue is not able to be photographed). You can also set up time with the Inspector to explain their findings in more detail. Reports are typically delivered electronically in a PDF format the day after the inspection is completed.

Does RV Inspectech have insurance?
Does RV Inspectech provide “buy/no buy” opinions?

Yes! We carry general liability, professional, personal injury, and proper business vehicle insurance that protects RV Inspectech and the locations where we perform inspections.

We do not include opinions in the inspection reports--we state the facts of the inspection findings and let you, the client, make decisions based on the facts. Providing pictures in the report helps validate the facts and gives you the specifics and confidence to make an informed decision.

Can I call RV Inspectech directly?

Yes! Please call 505-803-2453 to visit with the NRVTA Certified Inspector. We are in the Mountain Time Zone, so some calls may be returned the next day depending on the time of the call.

Why don't you have pricing on the website?

We provide pricing on a case-by-case basis because there are so many factors to consider when scheduling an RV inspection. The size and type of RV, the location of the RV, and any discounts you might qualify to receive are some of the important elements we consider when we quote you our fair and competitive price. Contact us to day to get your quote!

Does RV Inspectech perform fluid testing for engines?

We do! We can test gas and diesel engine fluids on motor homes and on generators. Typically, oil and coolant are the most popular items clients want tested, but we can also take samples of diesel fuel to test for bacteria, fungi, mold, water, and sediment. These tests are only performed when asked, and are not included in the typical inspection price. Contact us for more details on engine fluid testing!

Does RV Inspectech offer discounts?

Active Military, Veterans, First Responders, Healthcare (Direct Patient Care) Professionals, and Educators are all offered a discount from our regular pricing. (Discounts do not apply to fluid testing, only inspections--we keep our fluid testing prices as low as possible.)
